oo - zoom to the moon

Phase 3 - oo

The activities and games in this blog post can be adapted and used with any sound that your child is learning. Phase 3 sounds and words can be found on the sounds page.

Revisit and Review

Make 2 race tracks on strips of cardboard. I used the phase 3 tricky words but you could any tricky words, high frequency cards or sound cards from the pack. ⁣Find an object to race to such as the moon and choose 2 characters to race.

Put the matching flashcards face down between the race tracks. Take it in turns to choose one card and read it. If you have the word on your board, place the card on top. If not, put it back.

The first person to cover all of their words can move their toy along the track to the moon.

They are the winner! You can hide a new tricky words underneath the moon for them to discover. ⁣

You could also play by moving a toy or counter along the track in order of the words. So you can only move up when you turn the correct card over. This would take longer but would provide lots of opportunities to read and practice the tricky words.

Reading:

This activity was inspired by Five Minute Mum's zip wire activity. I introduced the oo sound and told Sophie that I was going to zoom (z-oo-m) some words down to Earth from the moon (m-oo-n).

I tied one end of a piece of string to a banister on the stairs and the other to a chair. I attached a post it note, with a word written on, to a coat hanger. Then I stood on the stairs and slid the coat hanger down. Sophie took the word off when it reached her and read it.

She had to decide whether it was an astronaut word (a real word) or an alien word (not a real word) and then put the word in the correct pile. We used some nonsense words because it provides an opportunity to practice phonic skills with unfamiliar words.

Spelling

We set up a balloon rocket to send some words back to the moon. We wrote them on post it notes and zoomed them back up to the moon.

I taped a straw to the rocket and threaded it on to some string that was tied to the chair and the banister. I blew the balloon up then stuck a note on to it with tape before letting go.

Sophie had a go at writing some words to zoom back to me. She needed help to blow the balloon up but loved letting go of it.

Here are some other words you could use:

Phase 3: too, zoo, boot, hoof, zoom, food, root, moon, rooftop.

Phase 4: proof, boost, bloom, spoon, scoop, broom, swoop.

If you have a go at any of these activities and share any photos on social media I would love to see photos of them in action. Please tag @miniwritersclub and use #miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
