ng - ping-pong sounds

Phase Three: ng

The activities and games in this blog post can be adapted and used with any sound that your child is learning. Phase 3 sounds and words can be found on the sounds page.

Revisit This is a fun way to revisit and practise sounds that have already been taught. Place 6 cups or mugs on the floor in a triangle shape. We tried using plastic cups but they kept getting knocked over. Place a sound card in each cup and leave a pile of spare cards by the side. We use the Phase 3 sounds but you could play this game using any sounds or words that your child has been taught to help them to recall them.

Take it in turns to throw a ping-ping ball into a cup. If you don't have a ping-pong ball you could use a ball of tin foil or a pair of socks. If your ping-ping ball lands in a cup, say the sound. If you get it correct keep the card and place a new sound from the pile into the cup.

The game is over when you run out of sound cards and the winner is the person that has collected the most.

Reading

Place three cups in a row and put a sound card underneath each one to make a CVC word (consonant - vowel - consonant). In these words the consonant might be made using a digraph, where two letters are making one sound. Ask your child to drop a ping-pong ball (or a pom pom or ball of tinfoil) into each cup as they say the sound. When they get to the end they should blend the sounds to read the word.

Words you could use: s-i-ng, k-i-ng, r-u-ng, h-a-ng, th-i-ng.

Spelling

Place the letter cards shown in the picture below to the side of the cups. Say a word e.g. thing and ask your child to repeat it. They could pull their hands apart as they say it as if they were stretching an elastic band.

They should sound out the word, dropping a ping-pong ball into each cup as they say the sounds. Sound the word out again and put the sound cards under each cup. Alternatively your child could write the sounds on paper or a whiteboard.

Phase 3 words you could make: sing, wing, long, hang, thing, sang, sung.

If you wanted to extend the activity you could add extra cards to make Phase 4 words e.g. sling, bring, sting, swing, strong, spring, hanger, finger.

If you have a go at this activity and share any photos on social media I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and use #miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
